Botanical Description:

Thuja occidentalis, commonly known as White Cedar or Eastern Arborvitae, is a coniferous tree native to northeastern North America. In Canada, it thrives in cool, moist climates, especially in boreal forests and wetlands. The tree has aromatic, scale-like leaves and produces small cones.


Aroma Profile:

  • Scent: Sharp, fresh, camphoraceous, and slightly woody

  • Aromatic Note: Top to middle

  • Blends Well With: Eucalyptus, Pine, Lemon, Lavender, Tea Tree, Cedarwood


Key Constituents:

  • Thujone (alpha and beta)

  • Fenchone

  • Sabinene

  • Camphene

  • Borneol
    (Note: High thujone content – use with caution)


Traditional Uses:

  • Historically used by Indigenous peoples of North America for ceremonial and medicinal purposes

  • Often employed in natural insect repellents and liniments

  • Used in small amounts for its purifying and antimicrobial properties in wellness and ritual blends


Aromatherapy & Topical Applications:

  • Purifying: Supports clearing and energizing environments

  • Respiratory Support: Can be used (with caution) in diffusers for opening airways

  • Topical Use: Must be highly diluted due to thujone content; typically used in salves and blends for muscular and joint support


Cautions:

  • High in Thujone: Neurotoxic and potentially hepatotoxic in high doses

  • Not for internal use

  • Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding

  • Use only in very low dilutions (≤0.4%) on skin

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets


Storage:

Store in a cool, dark place away from sunlight and heat. Proper storage will preserve the oil’s potency for up to 3–4 years.
