Description and Uses:

Vetiver Essential Oil is one of the most deeply grounding oils in aromatherapy—known for its rich, earthy aroma and its ability to encourage a sense of calm, stability, and emotional resilience. Steam distilled from the roots of Vetiveria zizanoides, Vetiver has a smoky, complex base note that is highly valued in both aromatherapy and natural perfumery.

Because Vetiver’s scent can be quite strong in its pure form, many people find it most enjoyable when diluted or used in small amounts. It is an exceptional fixative in perfumery, helping anchor lighter notes and adding depth, warmth, and longevity to blends. Vetiver is often chosen for evening routines, meditation blends, and any time you feel scattered, anxious, or overstimulated.

Traditionally, Vetiver has been used in blends intended to support:

  • Relaxation and emotional grounding

  • A calm, steady mood during times of stress

  • Skin care for blemish-prone skin (including acne) when properly diluted

  • Massage blends for joint discomfort and inflammation (traditional use)

Vetiver & Focus Support (Aromatherapy Research Note)

A small study conducted in 2001 by Dr. Terry Friedman, MD compared Lavender, Vetiver, and Cedarwood essential oils for improving focus and learning in children with ADD/ADHD. In this study, children ages 6 to 14 inhaled one of the oils three times daily for 30 days, and Vetiver was reported as the most effective in the observations and brain wave scans, showing improvement in all children in the Vetiver group. While many factors are involved in supporting attention and learning, this study suggests essential oils may be a helpful ally for concentration and focus as part of a broader approach.

Traditional Uses: grounding aromatherapy, perfumery fixative, calming blends, meditation support, blemish-prone skincare, massage blends for tension and discomfort.

Ways to Use Vetiver Essential Oil:

Grounding Diffuser Blend

Add 1–3 drops to a diffuser with Lavender or Sandalwood for a calm, steady atmosphere.

Focus Support Inhalation

Place 1 drop on an aromatherapy inhaler or diffuser jewelry and inhale gently as needed (do not apply undiluted directly to skin).

Natural Perfume Fixative

Add a small amount to perfume blends to deepen the aroma and help anchor lighter top notes.

Cautions:

For external use only. Always dilute properly before applying to skin. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children.

Vetiver is very potent—use sparingly and dilute well. Perform a patch test prior to topical use, especially for sensitive skin. If pregnant, nursing, or under a doctor’s care, consult your healthcare professional before use.
