Description and Uses:

Niaouli Essential Oil is a pale yellow to greenish oil steam distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca viridiflora. It has a sweet, sharp, fresh aroma and is prized in aromatherapy for its versatility and fortifying character.

Niaouli is closely related to Cajeput (Melaleuca cajeputi), but it is generally considered to have less skin-irritating potential. It is also related to Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), though Niaouli’s aroma is typically softer and sweeter. Because of its traditional association with cleansing and strengthening routines, Niaouli is often included in blends intended to support the body during times when immunity feels low or stamina is depleted.

Many people find Niaouli especially helpful when they’ve been stressed or under the weather for a long time, and want a gentle but effective aromatic ally that feels invigorating without being overly harsh. Because it can be stimulating, it is typically best used in small quantities (often no more than 2 drops per application) and is frequently paired with Lavender at night to promote relaxation while still benefiting from its fortifying qualities.

Niaouli is also traditionally used in blends for:

  • Respiratory comfort, especially when diffused during colds to help with congestion

  • Aches and pains, thanks to its traditional antispasmodic and analgesic reputation

  • Cleansing skincare routines for inflamed or itchy skin (when properly diluted)

  • Routine cuts and minor burns, where it has been traditionally used in cleansing washes

Some traditional uses include very specific dilution practices, such as adding a small amount to distilled water for washing minor wounds. It has also been used traditionally for spot applications (e.g., a single drop on a pimple or insect bite), though we recommend extreme caution and patch testing when using any essential oil in this manner.

Properties (Traditional): analgesic, anticatarrhal, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, diaphoretic, expectorant, febrifuge, stimulant, balancing, soothing.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine traditions, Niaouli is described as cool and dry, with uses associated with detoxifying, reducing inflammation, and combating infection.

Traditional Uses: immune support blends, respiratory diffuser blends, muscle comfort blends, cleansing skincare routines, seasonal wellness support.

Ways to Use Niaouli Essential Oil:

Fortifying Diffuser Blend

Diffuse 2–4 drops with Lemon or Eucalyptus to freshen the air and support seasonal comfort.

Nighttime Balance Blend

Combine 1 drop Niaouli + 3 drops Lavender in a diffuser or inhaler for a calming yet strengthening evening blend.

Muscle Comfort Massage

Dilute well in a carrier oil and massage into tired muscles or sore areas (patch test first).

Cautions:

For external use only. Always dilute properly before applying to skin. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children.

Use in small quantities (generally no more than 2 drops per application) to avoid overstimulation. Perform a patch test prior to topical use, especially for sensitive skin. If you have asthma or a respiratory condition, use only with guidance. If pregnant, nursing, or under a doctor’s care, consult your healthcare professional before use.
