Uses + Benefits of Tea Tree Essential Oil

How to Use Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea Tree essential oil is right up there with lavender and peppermint as must-have components of any aromatherapy kit. Tea tree essential oil is distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia. There are many species and subspecies of this tree, so there are several essential oils that are closely related to tea tree including cajeput and niaouli. Tea Tree oil is known mainly for its anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal qualities. A lot of people find the aroma of tea tree slightly off-putting at first. It's quite medicinal, somewhat like camphor oil with a hint of burnt rubber.  Regardless, for most of us, it's many benefits outweigh it's less-than-appealing aroma.

Here are five great ways to use tea tree essential oil:

1)      Research has found tea tree oil to be particularly effective in treating fungal and viral infections (especially in the mouth), which is why it's found in so many commercial toothpastes and mouthwashes. Add a drop or two on your toothbrush daily or you can make your own toothpaste and mouthwash, adding tea tree oil for its germ-killing benefits. (See our blog, Essential Oil Benefits for Dental Health for some recipes.)

2)      Tea Tree oil has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a perfect addition to any first aid kit. It helps with healing minor scrapes, insect bites, and minor rashes like diaper rash. Here is an easy recipe for an antiseptic spray for relief of any of these problems:

Tea Tree Antiseptic Spray for First-Aid

4 oz. distilled water

15 drops Tea Tree essential oil

2 teaspoons grain alcohol or vodka

Mix all ingredients in a 4 oz. spray bottle. Shake well before each use. If you want extra healing power you can add an equal amount of lavender oil to the mix.

3)      Add a drop or two to your shampoo to help control oil, dandruff or any other minor scalp issues.

4)      Tea Tree oil is great for your skin. It is not irritating (when used with a carrier) and its anti-bacterial properties soothe acne and dermatitis, among other skin complaints. It has been found in studies to protect skin against radiation from cancer treatments and it supports the regeneration of scar tissue and relieves swelling from inflammation. Make sure you mix it well with a carrier oil or basic plain lotion. Jojoba makes a great base for skin care.

5)      Tea Tree oil is extremely effective in cleaning products. Its antiseptic and antifungal properties make it a great ingredient in all-purpose cleaner for kitchens and bathrooms. It is particularly good at preventing mold in your bathroom. I make a simple spray with 8 oz. water, 1 teaspoon (approx.) dishwashing liquid or castile soap and one ml. (about 30 drops) of Tea Tree. Shake it well in a clean household spray bottle. I keep it in my shower and spray the walls and shower curtain down every time I shower to keep the mold at bay.
