Make Your Own Rose Oil
Capture the fleeting fragrance of roses by making your own rose-infused oil. As spring slips into summer, roses and their intoxicating scent are at their peak in most gardens. It’s hard not to feel wistful as the petals start to drop, so this year I decided to bottle my own rose-infused oil. I was delighted to discover how easy it is to make!
We love our rose essential oils so much here at Dreaming Earth Botanicals that we leave the empty canisters open on our desks so we can enjoy ever last molecule of the fragrance. It takes about 60,000 roses to distill one ounce of our rose essential oil, so it is one of our most expensive oils—although well worth the splurge if you want to treat yourself. We also offer it as an affordable 5% rose solution. The rose-infused oil you can make with your own rose petals will not smell as strong as rose essential oil, but it will result in a delightfully fragrant and useful oil from your very own roses.
What You'll Need:
- 1 glass jar/mason jar
- Rose petals (enough to fill your jar 3/4th full)
- Carrier oil (jojoba, fractionated coconut, and sweet almond are good choices, but olive oil will also work)
What You Do:

- Gather the rose petals from your most fragrant and pesticide–free roses in the morning, after the dew has evaporated. The most fragrant petals will be from roses that have just opened or are partially opened.
- Let the petals dry on a flat surface in the sun to prevent any mold or mildew from contaminating your oil. A screen is great for this, but just a sheet of paper will also do fine.
- Fill a clean jar 3/4 full with the petals, crushing and bruising them gently as you fill to release their oils.
- Add oil to the top of the jar. Add the lid and shake the jar.
- Let the rose petal oil sit in a sunny location for at least two weeks. Shake it daily.
- After two weeks, strain the oil through cheesecloth and discard the petals. If you’d like a stronger scent, repeat the process with new petals and let sit for another two weeks before straining again.
- Use your rose-infused oil as a gentle moisturizer for your face, as an aromatherapeutic massage oil, to give your hands or feet a pampering, or as a luxurious bath oil.
