Helichrysum Oil: Uses, Benefits & Shop
The Wonders of Helichrysum Essential Oil
When I first started working at Dreaming Earth Botanicals, seven years ago, I had never heard of Helichrysum oil (botanical name: helichrysum italicum). It took me a long while just to figure out how to pronounce its name, much less learn how to use helichrysum essential oil. What an amazing oil this is!
Helichrysum isn’t a spectacular flower: it is a yellowish strawflower that retains its shape when dried and has a subtle, summery smell, like dry grass. It is a very unassuming plant, but don’t let that fool you. Also known as Everlasting and Immortelle, Helichrysum has been used for centuries to heal physical and emotional maladies in Europe and Africa. In the US, it is best known for its ability to heal scar tissue.
How to Use Helichrysum Essential Oil on the Skin: Scars & Wrinkles
Whether used on new wounds or old, helichrysum can help tissue repair itself. Use a few drops in a carrier, like Rose Hip Seed Oil, or Tamanu Oil (5-6 drops of helichrysum per ounce of carrier oil) and apply to any kind of scar: stretch marks, surgical scars, or acne scars. Used with Lavender, Helichrysum is a pretty effective natural antibiotic and antiseptic to use on minor cuts and abrasions. Because of its ability to heal damaged tissue, it is widely used in anti-aging products. It rejuvenates the look of older skin, healing and soothing inflamed and sensitive skin. Helichrysum helps to prevent wrinkles, sagging and prevents and heals blemishes. It will even help take care of dark circles under your eyes. Helichrysum will soothe the effects of eczema and psoriasis. Make sure to dilute with a carrier before applying to your skin. A little Helichrysum goes a long way.
Because of its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, Helichrysum oil helps to relieve minor injuries such as bruises and sprains. (of course, please see a medical professional for any more serious injuries!). How to use helichrysum essential oil in this way? Combine one part each of Helichrysum, Lavender, and Clary Sage with a carrier to create an all purpose massage oil great for pain relief for headaches, muscle strain, aching muscles and arthritis.
How to Use Helichrysum Essential Oil for Respiratory Problems
This oils sounds too good to be true, but the reported benefits don’t end there: use it in a bath or in a diffuser to relieve congestion, asthma and bronchitis. Helichrysum oil can help eliminate phlegm and mucous from your respiratory system, helping to rid you of nagging cough and restore comfortable, regular breathing.
Helichrysum is also known for emotional and physical detoxification. It is thought to draw heavy metals and toxins out of the body, aiding in the healing of addictions and where there is emotional blockage. It has calming properties, helping one to release negative energy and stress to restore balance.
Like I said earlier, Helichrysum essential oil is one of the more precious oils and is not inexpensive. Dreaming Earth offers it by itself, as a pure essential oil, but also in a 5% solution with Jojoba, so you can experience all the amazing benefits of this oil at a lower cost.
