Essential Oils for Hair Loss

Can Essential Oils Help with Hair Loss?

We get quite a few emails and calls asking if essential oils can help with hair loss and requests for specific aromatherapy recipes.

Alopecia, which is the medical term for hair loss, is caused by the deterioration of hair follicles. If your hair loss isn’t caused by an underlying medical problem, lifestyle may be a factor.  Are you washing your hair too much?  Using the wrong products for your hair type or over-processing it?

Brushing your hair while it’s wet and not letting it dry on its own can exacerbate hair loss as can exposure to chlorine, too much sun or wind and pollution. In this day and age, stress and a poor diet can also contribute.  For some men, hereditary hair loss is inevitable, but there are ways to slow balding. Prescription drugs can stimulate hair growth by tightening blood vessels on the scalp, encouraging cell growth and strengthening weakened follicles so they can grow new hair. But, these drugs can be irritating and come with a list of side effects and precautions.  Why not try natural remedies?

Essential oils, used with natural carriers, can help without the harsh chemicals. Essential oils smell better, too!

Which Essential Oils are Best for Helping with Hair Loss?

Here is a list of aromatherapy oils found to stimulate hair growth: rosemary, neroli, lavender, geranium, ginger, cedarwood, thyme, lemon, grapefruit and cypress.

Aromatherapy Recipes for Preventing Hair Loss:

Rosemary is always a great choice for hair care, so adding a few drops of rosemary essential oil to your regular shampoo is an easy preventative step.

Before going to bed, put a teaspoon of olive oil or jojoba in the palm of your hand and add 3-6 drops of rosemary oil. Mix well and massage gently into the scalp. Shampoo as you would normally in the morning. The rosemary will strengthen and tighten the hair follicles, helping to retain the hair you have.
