Introduction - Our goal is to produce a professional and useful resource for information concerning aromatherapy, essential oils, and alternative healing practices in general. In addition to presenting feature articles in each edition, we also hope to create a forum for sharing reader's experiences with essential oils and other healing modalities. Our own interests are wide-ranging and we suspect that yours are as well. There are many approaches, from the scientific to the spiritual, that have something to contribute to our understanding and well-being and we want to explore all of them. If you have ideas about what you would like to see here, or, if you would like to submit an article, a letter to the editor, or a comment, let us know. We cannot promise to print everything we receive but we will respectfully and gratefully consider all submissions. We are interested in both educational articles and those that share personal healing journeys and experiences. - Editor

From the Editor: Thanks so much for your response to the first Essential News. We sent out over 8000 copies on the Web and of that number, only a handful opted out. Many of you recommended us to your friends and we have added over two thousand new names for this edition's mailing. We are very pleased and hope that you will continue to send us your feedback and recommend us to others. We welcome "Letters to the Editor" and continue to be interested in publishing articles submitted by our readers, including stories of personal healing journeys and experiences.

Happenings at Dreaming Earth: If you have visited our web site recently you have probably noticed that we have added a section on music and now have CDs on our shopping cart. Music came into our lives in a big way a few years ago when Joie met Cherokee healer and flute maker Hawk LittleJohn and received a flute from him. Hawk has since passed into Spirit but his Medicine continues to work through his flutes. Joie now studies flute and voice with Joshua Bernstein, Hawk's friend and apprentice. Like Joie, Josh is interested in Sound Healing and they will hopefully be offering some workshops and retreats with this focus in the future. Josh's CDs, featuring his performance on Native flute and silver flute, are now available on the web site. He's an awesome player and his music is Spirit-inspired and unique. Josh also makes flutes, a skill that he learned from Hawk. If you are interested in getting a flute or taking a workshop or lesson with Josh, let us know.

We have other musicians at Dreaming Earth and hope to feature their CDs on the web site soon. Gwendolyn, our bottling contractor, is an incredible drummer. Her latest band, Surya Gameela, has recently produced their first CD of Middle Eastern music. Its great and we'll have it on the site soon.

Joie's practice is moving more and more into the area of Vibrational Medicine and healing and she is working to develop ideas about the musical and sound signatures of healing herbs and flowers. Check out her article on Sound Healing in an upcoming issue of the Essential News.

One other thing is that we have recently switched from 10ml to ½oz(15ml) bottles and are in the process of having new labels printed but, in the meantime, most of our labels still say 10ml even though you're really getting 15ml. For the moment, we're keeping the prices the same but will have to increase a bit sometime in late September.

We hope that you continue to enjoy the newsletter and we look forward to hearing from you.

Essential Oil of the Month: SCOTCH PINE - Pinus sylvestris (called Pine Needle in our catalog and web site).

From our home in western North Carolina, we have views over a beautiful lake to the Blue Ridge Mountains, where we often go hiking and foraging. Our forests here are predominately composed of mixed deciduous trees but we also have some evergreens as well, including hemlocks, firs, cedars, and various types of pine. Recently, I came on a nice Pine grove while hiking and since I was very tired from the walk, I sat down under one of these trees to rest. Leaning up against the trunk with my eyes closed, I remembered that Pine trees are known to emit great amounts of Prana which can be absorbed by anyone in their vicinity. Sitting there in the grove, smelling the sharp, clean, invigorating aroma, I found myself strengthened and revived by this wonderful source of vital energy. Like the tree itself, the essential oil of Pine is a wonderful energizer that helps to increase strength and vitality.
There are over 100 species in the genus Pinus and several produce essential oils that have been used in aromatherapy, including Pinus sylvestris (Scot's or Norway Pine), P. pinaster ("maritime" pine), P. Palustris (longleaf or Southern yellow pine), P. strobus (Eastern white pine), P. nigra (Black pine), and P. mugo (Dwarf pine). Of these, the most widely used in aromatherapy is P. sylvestris, the Scotch pine. It is the safest and most useful of the pine oils.
The Scotch pine is native to Russia and Northern Europe and is now cultivated in America, Europe, Russia, and Scandinavia. An therapeutic grade essential oil is produced by distillation of the needles. An inferior grade of essential oil is obtained from distillation of the wood chippings and turpentine is made by distilling the oleoresin. Turpentine is sometimes used by herbalists or other trained practitioners but I don't recommend it for general use and, of course, you wouldn't want to use an inferior grade of oil for any therapeutic purpose.
The venerable pine has been used for many centuries as a medicinal plant. Native Americans used it to prevent scurvy and repel lice and fleas; they also burned it with cedar and juniper for purifying rituals. In addition the needles and shoots have been prepared in various ways for use with coughs, bronchial complaints, rheumatic pain and nervous exhaustion.
Essential oil of Pinus sylvestris is a pale yellow or colorless, pourable liquid with a, sharp, balsamic, "piney" odor. It blends well with cedarwood, rosemary, lavender, juniper, and eucalyptus but it can overwhelm more delicate fragrances. It is antibacterial, antiviral, antineuralgic (reduces nerve pain), soothing, cholagogic (stimulates the flow of bile into the duodenum), choleretic (promotes excretion of bile by the liver), diuretic, expectorant (promotes removal of mucous from the respiratory system), hypertensive, insecticidal, and rubefacient (causing redness of the skin). It also stimulates the adrenal cortex and the circulatory and nervous systems and is said to have a restorative and strengthening action.
In aromatherapy, the essential oil of Pinus sylvestris has been used to help relieve coughs, bronchitis, sore throat, sinusitis, cystitis, colds and flu, arthritis, gout, muscle pain, poor circulation, rheumatism, neuralgia, fatigue and exhaustion, and stress-related conditions. It is also sometimes used as a component of deodorants to help decrease perspiration. Julia Lawless describes the essential oil as non-toxic, non-irritant (except in concentration), and as a possible sensitizing agent (one that can lead to allergic-like reactions with repeated use). She recommends avoiding it in allergic skin conditions. Tisserand and Balacs do not report skin sensitization with this oil but I believe that it is best to err on the side of caution and I would avoid it or use it very cautiously in persons who have a history of allergic reactions or who have experienced sensitization with other oils.
Many aromatherapy books do not have anything on essential oil of Pine and in this respect it seems to be less popular than some other oils. This may be due to the fact that its aroma reminds some people of pine-scented cleaners. Personally, I like the odor and find it clean and uplifting. It is such a shame that some writers have not included Pine in their books, because this essential oil is so useful, especially when there are respiratory problems, muscle aches and pains, or exhaustion. One of my favorite authors, Gabriel Mojay, does write about Pine in his wonderful book, Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit. He describes it in terms of oriental medicine as being warm and dry and says that it tonifies the Qi. He says that it is psychologically fortifying and invigorates the "P'o" or Bodily Soul, the source of our vital spirit. Valerie Worwood, another of my favorites, describes it as helping to bring acceptance, understanding, patience, and self-forgiveness.
Pine is related to the Air element, and this points towards its use for respiratory problems. I use pine for colds and flu and other times when I need to clear my respiratory tract and ease muscle aches and pains. I also use it when I feel in need of "fortifying" and strengthening. The element of Air rules the mental plane and here too, Pine may have great powers, as it helps to bring clarity, fortitude, and purposeful focus.
It is important to use Pine in moderation - no more than one or two drops in a steam inhalation, diffuser, or a massage oil. By using it in a diffuser, you can avoid any potential problems with skin irritation. I do not recommend this oil for use by those who have hypertension (high blood pressure) or asthma. - Joie Power, Ph.D.

Aromatherapy for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a poorly understood chronic illness that presents with complaints of persistent, unexplained fatigue together with various combinations of other flu-like symptoms such as recurrent sore throat, headache, joint and muscle pain, poor concentration, irritability, depression, low-grade fever, and swollen lymph nodes. Although no cause has been conclusively identified, it is commonly accepted that the syndrome reflects the presence of a smoldering viral infection in persons whose immune response has been compromised by chronic physical or psychological stress.
Although no definitive "cure" has been discovered for CFS, holistic regimens emphasizing diet, moderate exercise, herbal and nutritional supplementation, massage therapy, and stress reduction have proven helpful in reducing symptoms and aiding recovery.
Aromatherapy is also an important component in holistic approaches to CFS and there are a number of essential oils which can ease symptoms and support healing processes in persons with CFS and related disorders. Specifically, essential oils such as Chamomile, Geranium, Peppermint, Rosewood, Lavender, Lemon, and Marjoram can be helpful, when used appropriately, for boosting the immune system, promoting relaxation, easing muscle pain, lifting mood, and improving sleep quality.
Try the following combination of essential oils in a warm (not hot) bath to ease stress and muscle pain:
3 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
2 drops Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium var. amara)
1-2 drops Frankincense (Boswellia cateri) - optional
Use only Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils. Draw the bath first, mix the essential oils with a tablespoon of milk, add to the bath water, swirl them around with your foot, get in and relax. Allow yourself 10 to 20 minutes. Do not get the bath water in your eyes, as the oils will sting. Use this formula once a day for 3 or 4 days a week over a two to three week period.
There are many readily available aromatherapy reference books that offer further suggestions for utilizing essential oils in CFS. Check the indexes for "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" and "Myalgic Encephalomyelits", or ME, which is the term more commonly used in England.

Readers Tips - Frankincense and Veterinary Medicine

I am Burton Miller DVM, a practitioner of homeopathy, herbology, nutrition, and spinal manipulation. I would like to share an essential oil use I have had consistent success with. Many pets suffer from multiple skin tags, warts, adenomas, and the like. This is considered a part of the "vaccinosis" syndrome in homeopathic philosophy. I can often cure the tendency for the syndrome to progress (i.e. more to be formed) but getting the body to resorb existing ones is more of a challenge. I have had consistent good luck with oil of frankincense topically, am/pm for 2-6 weeks.
